Overview of Support offered

If you struggle with words, whether that is reading, writing or spelling the IDL System can help you improve your literacy.

Many people find reading and writing difficult. If you missed out at school because you found reading and writing hard, then we may have the programme for you. To become great at reading and writing you do have to learn some basic rules of putting the sounds that make up words together. Once you have learned those basic rules then you may find that your skills improve. Unfortunately, English rules can vary and if you “missed” the opportunity to learn those rules, then you will struggle with reading and writing. Quite often, if you found English hard in primary school, it will be because you did not “get” those rules. Our programme helps you to understand those rules and supports you to practice them until you understand and can use them effectively.

The IDL System is a specialised computer based programme to help people to improve their literacy. Using a principle known as connectionism, the system uses a multi-sensory approach using sight, hearing, touch and speech to support improvements in reading, spelling and general literacy.

Sessions are 1 hour long, but we suggest that you attend for 2 hours and undertake 2 sessions at the centre per week.

You will need to take a spelling and reading assessment before the programme starts so that we can accurately place you into the programme. Our assessments can indicate whether you are dyslexic and whether it would be helpful to refer you onto a professional diagnosis.
