Overview of Support offered

Mentees will be given tuition sessions to upskill young people in English, Maths & ICT with support to help prepare them for further training and employability.

The courses use styles and methods that are suitable even for those who haven’t thrived in classroom conditions and learning incorporates elements of interactive digital media; for example, Maths and ICT may include interactive games activities whilst English can be recorded to help learners to reflect, review and improve their Speaking and Listening skills.

The programme (which usually lasts 16-24 days) includes:

  • Assessments and diagnostics to work out the learner’s starting points,
  • Carefully planned lessons with clear and appropriately challenging work,
  • Regular feedback on tasks, assessments and mock exam papers,
  • A buddy to check in regularly throughout the course
  • Full certification upon completion of the course and examination.

All learning takes place in safe, quiet environments delivered by assessors and trained facilitators and the course takes disabilities, difficulties and learning styles into account with flexibility and additional support available depending on the participant.

Outcomes expected

Participants will develop their functional skills with certification to improve confidence and employability and to open doors to further training.

Mentees would work towards a Functional Skills Qualification in English, Mathematics or Information, Communication & Technology from Entry Level 1 all the way up to Level 2 (guided by their initial assessment) with certificates available within 6 weeks of completing the course.

There is a natural expectation that over the course of the programme, participants will develop, aspirations to learning, motivation to work and understand benefits of working and with support looking at next steps in terms of education, training and employability.

The placement–styled nature of the programme encourages participants to develop a routine, get acclimatised to a work environment and build confidence working with teams and contributing to projects.
