Overview of Support offered
The What? Centre is a BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) accredited counselling service with 31 years of specialising in counselling for young people, mainly between the ages of 13 to 25 but also with older young people if required. We have a range of qualified and experienced counsellors able to provide one-to- one counselling on a very wide range of issues including panic, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, self harm, suicidal ideation. Also problems around anger, relationships with partners/family/friends. We also provide counselling to help young people with barriers to work such as having become socially isolated and so not used to talking to others, and the counselling helps to build confidence, look at negative thought processes and work with the individual to look at replacing some of those with more positive processes. It can also help with issues such as OCD, bereavement and life changing events such as abuse, bullying, trauma and post traumatic stress. The Centre uses two measurements of outcomes for the young person which help to identify risks and the individuals need for counselling and to do this we use the CORE at the start of counselling and again at the end of counselling. The other method is called STAR Outcomes and this is completed in the room with the client and addresses all areas of their mental well being on a scale of 1-10 including mental health, self-care, living skills, social networks, work, relationships, addictive behaviour, responsibilities, identity and self-esteem, trust and hope all of which are important to their mental health and well-being. Young people enjoy being able to see the improvements they have made whilst in counselling and we are able to produce these charts for them electronically. The Centre has been able to benchmark its counselling service and compare itself nationally through this system and this shows that we are performing at a level of 19% higher success rates than across the rest of the country with improvements for 84% in their mental health, 81% in identity and self-esteem, 74% in trust and hope, 62% in relationships and 60% for work or education related issues.
